Greetings,

I often talk about both personal leadership and servant leadership. But it is a mistake to assume these qualities are all about the business world.

A number of years ago I provided a keynote address on the topic of servant-leadership to a group of engineers. When I was done, a man in his 40s approached me with his hand extended to shake my hand. He said, “If I had only known about these principles, it would not only have changed how I manage others, but how I live my life! I would have been a better husband, father, and son. I would have handled problems differently and not with an overbearing approach.”

I responded that once you realize that being a “servant” is the core to genuine leadership, it changes how you view life and the value of other people.

The lesson here is that these principles are not only for business relationships. Leadership development is about the transformation of the total person, not just the superficial addition of a few new ideas, concepts, or theories.
